OPEN LETTER TO THE UPC CONGREGATION June 15, 2020 Dear Fellow Church Members, In April, Session approved the creation of a Safety Task Force (working with Lehigh Presbytery). The Session and Task Force has been discussing the possibility of reopening the church to in-person worship and for other meetings and gatherings. We would like to make you aware of our discussions and decisions. We spent a good deal of time talking about the guidelines from the state and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and how those guidelines impact any kind of group gathering during the "yellow phase" and eventually green. Our first concern is the health and safety of all who may be in the building. Guidelines regarding safety recommend that no more than 25 people be in one space; individuals should be screened before entering the building, i.e. temperature taken; everyone should wear a mask; social distancing should be practiced; congregations/gatherers should not participate in group singing or unison recitation; materials like bulletins, Bibles and hymnals should not be used; and spaces must be cleaned/sanitized after each use. Given these constraints on gathering, we have decided that it is premature for us to return to in-person worship. We agreed that worship under these circumstances would not resemble our traditional notion of worship. Additionally, we will continue to hold Worship virtually on ZOOM along with committee and Board meetings. As we move forward, our hope is that we will be able to go back to in-person church worship soon. We all understand that COVID-19 has changed everything. We look forward to finding/adapting new ways of Worshiping that combine/blend our pre & post COVID Worship experiences as the spirit renews our church vision. Rev. Dr. Sue Pizor Yoder has been very inspiring leading the Zoom Worships with a series that explores ‘clothing’ ourselves with our ‘FRUIT of the Spirit’ in these challenging times. Please consider joining us if you have not done so. Please check the church website [unitedpresbyterian.com] for updated information, Links to Zoom Worship services and other resources. We are communicating with other groups who use the building (AA, NA, Home Schoolers, Youth groups, etc.) to let them know that we are not ready to reopen our building. We are inviting them to contact us if they have particular questions or concerns regarding their group. As we move into other phases of relaxing guidelines, we will review new recommendations and how they impact reopening the building to our church community and others. Feel free to contact us with your questions or comments. Safety is our number one concern. We ask that you hold the church and church family in your Prayers. We pray that all in our community will remain safe and healthy. Your Session
